Model Code of Conduct violation: Liquor bar in Chennai’s Saidapet Assembly constituency sealed for staying open late

Chennai: Election officials on Friday sealed Tasmac shop No 926 on Sriram Nagar Main Road in the Saidapet constituency for operating during prohibited hours, following a complaint received by the election control room. A flying squad found the bar functioning during unauthorised morning hours. The assistant returning officer for Saidapet ordered the premises to be sealed. Further action is being initiated, officials said.The action comes amid intensified surveillance across all 16 assembly constituencies in Chennai for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, where several other enforcement measures are being undertaken as well. Flying squads, static surveillance teams, and video monitoring units are carrying out round-the-clock checks to enforce the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).On Thursday, officials presented constituency-wise details, including voter strength, polling trends from the past two elections, and polling stations at a review meeting held at Victoria Hall. Preparations involving polling personnel, micro observers, and other election staff were reviewed too, along with action taken under the MCC including removal of wall posters, banners, and flags, seizures made by enforcement teams, and complaints received through cVIGIL and SUVIDHA apps. Officials assessed readiness of EVMs, training centres, postal ballot arrangements, counting centres, and voter awareness campaigns. Election expenditure observer Bhavan Lal Meena told officials to ensure close monitoring of election expenditure and violations. Authorities urged the public to report violations to 89258 19472.
