MBBS aspirant’s dad duped of over 5L, fraudster arrested

Kanpur: A case of fraud linked to medical admissions came to light in Kanpur, in which fraudsters extorted lakhs of rupees with false promise of MBBS seat. The victim neither got the seat nor received the money back. Kalyanpur police said on Tuesday that they had arrested two accused in Siliguri, while the main accused remained absconding.A Kalyanpur resident was duped of Rs 5.75 lakh in the name of securing MBBS admission for his daughter. Kalyanpur resident Dr Pankaj Pranjal received a call on Feb 16. The caller identified himself as Dr R B Gupta, principal of Katihar Medical College in Bihar and told him about a vacant MBBS seat. Trusting the information, Dr Pranjal spoke to his friend Sunil Kumar, resident of Kalyanpur Kala, whose daughter aspired to pursue medical education. When Kumar contacted the accused for his daughter’s admission, the caller demanded Rs 4 lakh. Kumar transferred Rs 25,000 to the medical college’s account and Rs 3.75 lakh to the account of ‘Alkarim Trust’.The accused called him to Patna on Feb 22, but instead of showing up, sent message on mobile demanding an additional Rs 3.5 lakh, in response to which Kumar sent Rs 1.75 lakh. Later, when he realised he had been cheated, Kumar lodged police complaint.Kalyanpur police arrested Jayant Sarkar, resident of Shantipara in Jalpaiguri, Bengal and Saurav Ainch, resident of Babupara in Siliguri, Darjeeling, and sent them to jail on Monday. Investigation revealed that the money was routed into the accounts of both accused.Kalyanpur Inspector Santosh Singh said the two accused had been sent to jail. “The search for the main accused is underway,” he added.
