Cyber cops bust fake call centre after Interpol info

Kolkata: The city cops’ cyber cell registered a case after receiving information from Central Bureau of Investigation’s Interpol wing about an alleged fraudulent international call centre operating from Nayabad Avenue, in the Panchasayar area. A few persons have been detained. The call centre was allegedly being run by a man called Ankit. Officers said the group posed as representatives of major technology and financial services brands, including Apple, Geek Squad, McAfee, Norton and PayPal, to target foreign nationals, especially from the US. The accused allegedly exploited the names of globally recognised companies to gain the trust of victims abroad and obtained money dishonestly. They are suspected of inducing victims to transfer money through fake tech-support schemes.Authorities are examining digital devices, communication records and financial transactions linked to the suspected call centre as part of the investigation. tnn
