Ahmedabad: Liquor hidden in footwear cartons seized | Ahmedabad News
Ahmedabad: The prevention of crime branch seized liquor worth Rs 1.9 lakh concealed in footwear cartons near Prem Darwaza, exposing a smuggling attempt using transport consignments. A complaint was filed with Madhavpura police on Sunday.Acting on a tip-off around 2am, a PCB team reached a transport godown near Gujarat Ginning Mill and found multiple cartons labelled as footwear stacked outside. On checking, most boxes contained ladies’ slippers, but one carton had smaller boxes hidden between plastic packets of footwear. These concealed boxes contained sealed bottles of liquor, some of which were found broken.Police detained a labourer at the godown, who said he was responsible for unloading goods arriving at night. He claimed ignorance about the contents of the cartons. Officers then kept watch at the spot to identify those who would collect the consignment, but no one turned up.Documents recovered from the cartons indicated that the shipment was sent from a Delhi-based firm to a local footwear trader. Police suspect the liquor was being transported illegally under the cover of legitimate goods to avoid detection. In total, 32 bottles of liquor and 90 pairs of slippers were seized. A case has been registered.
