Green activists protest felling of tree in Dhakuria | Kolkata News

Kolkata: Green activists and residents in the city protested after a mango tree was axed near the Dhakuria flyover. They demanded a probe. A campaign was started under the banner of an organization called ‘Each One Plant One.’According to the people living nearby, it stood strong at Sangeet Sarani until Tuesday. They found it chopped off on Wednesday. Locals suspect that the owner of a building that was being renovated near it and its contractors might have taken the action. “The tree was fell to facilitate the renovation. It seems that no permission was taken before chopping it off,” said a resident. Members of the green forum has urged locals to share with them anything they know of the incident or about its perpetrators. They have also planned to hold a meeting if no action was taken against the guilty. The organization has launched an online campaign. They are planning to register an official complaint with KMC. It is the civic body, which has the final say over felling of trees. A KMC parks department official said it had not received any complaints till Wednesday. But they also said no permission was sought. An official said it would probe the matter.
