Thieves dig 3ft tunnel to target jewellery shop, decamp with 8L goods | Kanpur News
Kanpur: A group of robbers pulled off a movie-style robbery at a jewellery store in Kanpur’s Chakeri police station area by digging a three-foot tunnel and making off with Rs 8 lakh worth of goods and the CCTV DVR.The thieves burrowed into Khatu Jewellers in the Ahirwan area, swiping 1.5 kg of silver, 25 grams of gold, and about Rs 50,000 in cash. After the daring heist, they also uprooted two CCTV cameras installed in the shop along with the DVR. The suspects escaped through the same tunnel, police said.Shop owner Sonu Verma said he closed the shop and headed home on Monday night. A neighbour alerted him about the break-in next morning. Verma found thieves had dug a tunnel from the empty plot behind to get in.On being alerted, police reached the spot after receiving information and started the investigation. Station in-charge Ajay Prakash Mishra said the accused are being identified with the help of CCTV footage from cameras installed in the area.Office-bearers of Uttar Pradesh Adarsh Vyapar Mandal also reached the spot and expressed displeasure over the continuous theft incidents in the city.
