Diamond worker duped of 1.7L in marriage fraud

Surat: A 43-year-old diamond worker from Surat was allegedly cheated of Rs 1.7 lakh in a marriage fraud, with police booking a matchmaker and the woman he ‘married’ after she reportedly married another man.According to the complaint lodged with Laskana police, Vipul Timbadiya, works as a diamond manager in a private firm. In May last year, he met one Bhikhabhai at a friend’s embroidery unit and expressed his desire to get married. Bhikhabhai introduced him to a matchmaker, Kamlesh Kamani.Police said Kamani later arranged a match with a woman identified as Sonal Chauhan. On Sep 28, Chauhan, along with Kamani, his wife and her younger brother, visited Timbadiya’s residence. After both parties agreed, the marriage was finalized.Kamani allegedly told Timbadiya that Chauhan had no parents and needed financial support to take care of her brother. After this, Timbadiya paid Rs 1.7 lakh in cash and online. The two got married on Oct 2.On March 3, Kamani called Timbadiya claiming that his son was hospitalized in Rajkot and requested that Chauhan be sent there. After leaving for Rajkot, she allegedly stopped responding to Timbadiya’s calls.The matter came to light when a relative informed Timbadiya after seeing photos of Chauhan’s second marriage on social media. Further inquiry revealed that she had married a Jasdan resident, Rajesh Padaliya, on March 15.After this, Timbadiya approached police, who registered a case against Chauhan and Kamani.
