Saddened, disappointed with Una case verdict: Mevani | Ahmedabad News
Gandhinagar: Gujarat Congress working president and Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani on Tuesday said he was disappointed with the trial court verdict in the 2016 Una flogging case and demanded that the state govt appeal the verdict to protect the rights of Dalits.“We are saddened and disappointed with the verdict in the case where 35 accused have been acquitted and only five have been found guilty. I demand that the state govt appeal against the verdict of the trial court. If the Gujarat state govt does not do this, it will mean that it does not care about the rights of Dalits,” Mevani said.He added that the govt had promised that victims would receive govt jobs and agricultural land, but neither has been provided so far.He stated that the flogging of Dalit youth in 2016 in Una caused nationwide outrage, with top leaders of opposition parties visiting Una and demanding justice for the atrocity on Dalits. “I myself led a 400km march seeking justice for the victims.”
