Amid the continuing West Asia crisis and fear of short supply of LPG, applications for PNG connections have soared in key cities of the state even as govt has allayed fears in light of cuts in commercial supply of LPG and panic bookings by domestic users. A senior official of Gujarat Gas Limited confirmed there has been a jump in inquiries for PNG connections from domestic as well as commercial segments in Ahmedabad. “Under our special campaign we are doing our best to provide the connections within few days of applications,” he said, requesting anonymity. “Connections to societies or commercial complexes that already have a PNG line are immediate. In cases where a pipeline needs to be laid, connections can take some days,” the official said. Around 70% of restaurants in Ahmedabad have PNG connections, according to Dilip Thakkar, co-chapter head of National Restaurants Association of India. “Those using commercial LPG cylinders are seeking now PNG connections, encouraged by how restaurants with PNG connections are operating without a hitch in the current situation.” Thakkar added, “Many are also of the view that there is no need to take long-term decisions based on a short-term crisis.” Vadodara Gas Ltd (VGL), too has been busy clearing PNG applications. VGL managing director V K Srivastava said that the company has sufficient gas supply so far. “There is concern about LPG supply and we are doing our best to provide connections at a brisk pace to take the pressure off the oil marketing companies supplying LPG,” he said. A VGL official said, “Against eight to 10 applications a month earlier, we have received 15 applications this month till March 15,” said VGL administrative officer Jignesh Gohil. Demand for commercial connections could triple if the LPG cylinder supply to commercial units remains rationed. In Vadodara, the period from March 9-15 alone saw 400 new applications.
