SGCCI flags LPG access issue, seeks Aadhaar-based allocation

Surat: City industries have urged the govt to address issues related to domestic LPG cylinder access, especially for migrant workers. In a representation submitted on Tuesday, the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) wrote to Surat district collector Sourabh Pardhi seeking immediate intervention.SGCCI president Nikhil Madrasi said a large section of Surat’s workforce comprises migrant labourers from other districts and states, many of whom do not have local ration cards, making it difficult to obtain LPG connections. In its representation, SGCCI warned that the shortage of gas cylinders and access barriers could lead to growing dissatisfaction among workers. If unresolved, it may trigger reverse migration, impacting key sectors like textiles and diamonds that rely heavily on migrant labour. To address the issue, the chamber has proposed linking LPG cylinder allocation to Aadhaar cards instead of ration cards, noting that Aadhaar is a widely accepted identity document and could ease access to cooking fuel for workers.
