Man opens fire after clash during cricket match in Dholka

Ahmedabad: A minor altercation during a cricket match in a village in Ahmedabad district’s Dholka taluka escalated into violence on Sunday, when one person allegedly opened fire, triggering panic. Police said two groups of youths were playing cricket when a player was hit by the ball, leading to a heated argument between the sides. The spat soon spiralled into a physical clash. One of the accused allegedly assaulted another youth with the bat causing injuries. Other members of the group too attacked the victim with sticks. Amid the scuffle, one of the accused allegedly fired a firearm, although someone from the group intervened and pushed the weapon upward, causing the bullet to be shot in the air. The firing created panic in the village, with residents rushing indoors for safety. On being alerted, senior police officers and local crime branch personnel rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. A heavy bandobast was put in place to prevent further escalation. The injured youth was provided medical aid, and a police complaint was lodged by the victim.
