Morocco explores direct flights to India

Chennai: Morocco is exploring the possibility of direct flight connectivity with India to promote tourism. However, officials indicate that current passenger volumes may not yet justify such a move.“Morocco saw almost 54,000 Indian visitors in 2025, and this is expected to rise to 70,000 this year. Once the number touches one lakh, a direct flight will be viable,” said Jamal Kilito, country manager, Moroccan national tourism office, at a media round table in the city. At present, travel between the two countries relies on connecting flights via West Asian or European hubs, limiting accessibility and adding to travel time. “At least 10 Indian weddings are held in Morocco every year and 15 MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) groups visit us. Many Bollywood movies have also been shot in Morocco. The govt offers subsidies,” he added.Among the major cities to visit is Marrakech, known for its vibrant medina, souks, historic palaces, and street food culture; Fez, which is the cultural and spiritual centre; the economic capital Casablanca; Rabat, the capital city with a mix of modern infrastructure and historic sites like Kasbah of the Udayas and coastal views; and Tangier, the coastal city with a blend of European and Moroccan influences. Experts said that Morocco is trying to make use of the tourism boom in India. However, airfares have remained a deterrent. “The return airfare from Chennai costs 80,000 on average—similar to European destinations. If direct flights are introduced, the travel cost will come down and more people will choose Morocco,” said Sriharan Balan, managing director, Madura Travel Service Pvt Ltd.
