Gang smuggles ganja hidden in cashew waste, arrested

Chennai: A five-member gang that attempted to smuggle 35kg of ganja in a truck by concealing it in cashew waste was arrested near Tiruvallur on Sunday.Acting on a tip-off that ganja was being smuggled from Odisha via Andhra Pradesh by rail and then transported by lorry into Tamil Nadu, Tiruvallur police intensified surveillance. During vehicle checks near Kannur and Pudupettai, a lorry carrying cashew waste for oil production was intercepted. Upon inspection, police discovered 35kg of ganja beneath the load. The contraband was seized, and police arrested Arun 28, Pandian 26, Lokesh 30, Tony Gowtham 32, Madhesh 26, and Ajith Kumar 25.Inquiry revealed that the smugglers unloaded the consignment in secluded areas and later dispatched the ganja to districts such as Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpet, and Chennai. It is then sold to school and college students.
