Wardha: Datta Meghe, a senior political leader and educationist who shaped public life across Vidarbha for decades, was cremated with state honours on Sunday evening at his farm in Wardha, drawing thousands of mourners and tributes from across political and social spheres.Meghe, a former MP, died in Nagpur on Sunday. His mortal remains were brought to his residence in Sawangi (Meghe) on Monday, where a steady stream of citizens gathered to pay their respects. People from political, educational and social sectors joined local residents in large numbers, reflecting his wide influence in the region.The funeral procession moved in the afternoon from Sawangi (Meghe) to his residence, with crowds lining both sides of the route for a final glimpse. Floral tributes were offered at multiple points, and chants of “Datta Meghe amar rahe” resonated as the procession passed.The last rites were performed at his farm, in accordance with his wishes. His sons, ex-MLC Sagar Meghe and Hingna MLA Sameer Meghe, lit the funeral pyre in the presence of family members in an emotional ceremony.A number of prominent leaders attended to pay homage, including chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union minister Nitin Gadkari, Revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, minister of State Pankaj Bhoyar and several legislators and former ministers. Senior administrative and police officials were also present.Meghe was regarded as an influential figure in the Wardha-Nagpur region, having been elected to the Lok Sabha multiple times. Over the years, he worked across political parties, focusing on issues of public welfare and regional development.His work extended into education, where he established a network of institutions in the Nagpur-Wardha belt. He played a key role in developing a deemed university at Sawangi (Meghe), offering courses in medicine, engineering and management, with a stated aim of making higher education accessible to rural and middle-class students.Meghe was also associated with initiatives in healthcare and rural development, particularly in improving access to medical services and basic infrastructure such as roads and water supply.Remembered as a leader who combined politics with institution-building, Meghe leaves behind a legacy rooted in education and public service, with institutions that continue to serve thousands across the region.
