Tremors in Darj, Gangtok as 4.1-mag quake hits Sikkim | Kolkata News

Darjeeling: A 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Mangan in north Sikkim at 8.46pm on Saturday, sending brief tremors across parts of the eastern Himalayan region, including Darjeeling and Gangtok. While the earthquake was felt in several areas, Darjeeling residents reported only mild tremors.People in Gangtok, however, experienced the shaking more distinctly.Usha Lachungpa, a retired wildlife conservationist based in Gangtok, described the experience as “intense” despite its short duration.“It’s not the first time this year. I was working on my laptop when the windows started rattling. Most people in the Himalayan region understand that such events are natural — we have lived through them before,” she said.Lachungpa also stressed the need to balance development with environmental awareness.“We must remain mindful of the region’s geographical realities,” she added.
