CBI to look into ‘irregularities’ in scholarship fund

New Delhi: Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a case and initiated a probe into allegations of irregularities in scholarship funds allocated by the ministry of social justice & empowerment for students with disabilities.This move followed a preliminary inquiry into the ministry’s complaint, which suggested that around Rs 11 crore was siphoned off through the creation of fictitious beneficiaries during the 2023-24 period. Currently, 13 different institutions are being scrutinised for their alleged involvement in the misappropriation of these public funds.The probe agency filed the FIR under sections of criminal conspiracy, cheating and forgery.Officials said that a complaint was filed by the ministry in 2023, and a preliminary inquiry was initiated by CBI. “A physical verification of 100 educational institutions was carried out, and 18 institutes were found to be ‘fake’ on the national scholarship portal.” said an officer.
