44% of fatal drink-driving crashes from ’21-’25 in Panaji

Panaji: More than 44% of drink-driving accidents in the last five years were reported in the state capital. A total of 63 drunken driving accidents where people lost their lives were reported in the state, of which 28 were registered in Panaji.Between 2021 and 2025, 54 cases were registered in North Goa against people driving under the influence of alcohol, and nine were registered in South Goa.In the last five years, there was a spike in drink-driving cases in the state. Over 13,000 cases were registered in Goa in the last five years, and the highest — 5,346 cases — was registered in 2024. In 2025, over 4,274 drink-driving cases were registered. In 2023, 2,050 cases of drink-driving were registered; 1,387 in 2022; and 268 in 2021.“Members of the general public are once again requested not to drink and drive and risk the lives of others. Make Goan roads a safer place to drive and prevent accidents,” police said.So far, three people have been sentenced to simple imprisonment by different courts for a period ranging from one day to four days, in addition to fines ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000, police said.
