NMC corporators begin review of four years works under administrator rule

Nagpur: With the return of elected representatives after nearly four years of administrative rule, corporators of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation have begun scrutinising civic works executed between March 2022 and Feb 6, 2026. The exercise is expected to bring several irregularities to light, with discussions about possible “skeletons in the cupboard” already gaining momentum in the civic corridors. The four-year period saw the civic body run by an administrator under then municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari. Now, corporators across parties have started raising detailed questions about works undertaken during the period, particularly in slum areas, construction projects and civic facilities.BJP corporator Sanjay Chavare has already submitted a question seeking details of works carried out in the slum department during 2024-25 and 2025-26. Several other ruling-party corporators are also preparing to demand a full account of works approved and executed during the administrator regime. During the period, many decisions taken by Chaudhari faced opposition from BJP legislators, especially those related to extensions granted to garbage collection companies. MLA Pravin Datke even raised the issue in the state assembly. With the general body meetings of the civic body now resuming, corporators appear determined to revisit several such decisions. The general body meeting will be held on Friday at the Suresh Bhat Auditorium. BJP corporator Vijay aka Pintu Zalke is set to question illegal hoardings and commercial advertising boards installed during the administrator period. Senior BJP corporator Sudhir Raut is preparing to seek details on expenditure on lakes, especially Gandhisagar, the number of works completed, the installation of LED lights and how many of them were stolen, in what is expected to put both the construction and electrical departments under pressure.First-time Congress corporator Abhijit Jha has also indicated that he will raise questions regarding expenditure on open gyms, including the contractor, cost of equipment and the condition of damaged installations. The gardens department is likely to face tough questions on this issue. Meanwhile, ruling-party leader Narendra Borkar has decided to target the transport department. He plans to question the auction of JNNURM buses that became defunct during the administrator rule and whether spare parts went missing before the auction. He will also seek details on action taken against bus operators and whether any recovery was made.
